CONGRATULATIONS TO MY HUBBY! He is my 3rd Beachbody Challenger winner this year! Who wants to be next?
I’ve always considered myself a pretty active guy. I was a high school and college athlete, and always had a “sturdy” build. But as I got older, the beatings I gave my body in my younger days began to take their toll. By the time I was 50, I had had 3 shoulder and 3 knee surgeries, and was enduring back pain daily due to a ruptured disk from a car accident in my 30’s. Needless to say, I was living in chronic pain and could barely get through the day.
At this stage in my life, not only had I given up all forms of physical activity, I had abandoned eating healthy as well. I had a sales job that kept me on the road all day, which was my excuse to eat junk. So even though I was always tired, in pain, and had no energy, sadly I still didn’t consider myself unhealthy until I was diagnosed as a pre-diabetic. Wow, that news scared me more than I let anyone know. It was my wake up call to either change or throw in the towel. So I changed my diet and did P90X. I ended up losing 20 lbs. and my blood sugar went back to normal.
After dodging the bullet and reclaiming my health, you’d think I would have stuck with my new lifestyle. However, I gradually slid back into my old ways and in January 2012, I was diagnosed with full-blown diabetes and high blood pressure. That’s when my wife (who’s also my Beachbody Coach) introduced me to Shakeology. Not only did Shakeology taste great, it was great. Packed with all kinds of nutrition, it boosted my energy and I quickly started to see some amazing changes in my body and overall health. And as of this March, my doctor removed me from my cholesterol medications and has downgraded me from diabetic to hypoglycemic.
In addition to drinking Shakeology daily, my wife, 2 kids and I did P90X every night as a family. After completing that program, we did P90X2. Now those are my “go-to” workouts because once I find something that works, I keep doing it. I also like that I can make the programs progressively more difficult each round by increasing my weights.
Looking back, I’m very proud of my accomplishments. Not only did I lose 50 pounds, but I lowered my cholesterol from 294 to 190. My A1C blood sugar tests went from 8.5 to 5.9, and I downsized my jeans from a 38 to a 32. Having lost all that weight makes me feel more comfortable and confident with the way I look, plus I like having my wife compliment me on my abs.
Since I began my transformation journey a few years ago, the whole family has become more focused on fitness and nutrition as well. We all drink Shakeology and exercise daily, and I consider us ALL to be athletes. I thought my athletic days were far behind me—but I’ve re-discovered that part of me and it has made a huge difference in how I see myself, and how I view life. I know I’m finally setting the right kind of example for my family and it feels great!
But the real credit goes to my wife, because without her support I could not have done any of this. Then there’s Tony Horton: Thanks for your non-frills approach to exercise.
